The short version
Desktop Grid paints bordered, labeled zones directly onto the Windows desktop - behind your icons, under your windows - and keeps each icon where you put it. Zones are editable right on the desktop: rename, recolor, reshape, lock, or drag them with Figma-style snap guides. Auto-keep pulls any icon that wanders out back into its zone within seconds, and saved layouts survive resolution and monitor changes.
Windows has no concept of desktop regions, and every layout dies the moment you unplug a monitor. Existing fence tools were paid, heavy, or hijacked the desktop entirely. This one is a click-through overlay that only draws what you asked for and gives icons back their positions when the display changes.
Why it earns the install
- 01
Icon layouts survive resolution and monitor-count changes - save one layout per setup and they snap back automatically.
- 02
The overlay is per-pixel transparent and click-through; only the label tag, gear button and resize grips catch the mouse.
- 03
Auto-keep per zone: an icon moved out by you, an app, or Windows returns within seconds, and new icons dropped in are adopted.
- 04
Zones are edited in place - rename in any language including Georgian, pick shape, pick color with an on-screen eyedropper, lock to freeze.
- 05
Snap guides against other zones' edges and centers, so nothing ends up two pixels off.
- 06
Single portable exe, or an installer with a startup shortcut. Settings are one JSON file in %APPDATA%.
